«Inception, growth, and Closure of a Single Cycle Subduction Zone: the Farmatinian Arc between 27º and 33º South, Argentina»
Resumen:
- It is a chiefly field-based research program focused on an entire crustal window of the Famatinian magmatic arc that is exposed in the Sierras Pampeanas and Sierras de Famatina. The central objective is to test the hypothesis that, south of latitude 27o 30' south, the Famatinian paleoarc is an exceptional example of a single cycle subduction zone exposed on the Earth's surface. Positive testing the hypothesis will enable us to conduct a hard survey of several issues of relevance for Earth Sciences such as: 1) investigate how feasible is to unravel initiation in an ancient subduction zone; 2) address the question of what geodynamic and magmatic mechanisms operate in generating a single cycle transcrustal magmatic system; 3) test magmatic tempo improving on recent estimates of magma production in the Famatinian arc; 4) give insights into construction and destruction processes governing the evolution of the Continental Crustal; 5) explain why single cycle subduction zones are more likely to expose their root; 6) develop an unifying geodynamic model for a natural case of single cycle subduction zone. The implication of researching such natural case is at the vanguard of influential "subduction factory" community, which applies all the pertinent scientific methods to ponder the role of subduction zones in the evolution of the Earth through creating continental crust and deep mantle geochemical reservoirs. This project contributes positively to society in several important ways, as magmatic arcs remains a relevant problem of Earth Sciences for several reasons: 1) they contain the largest ore deposits; 2) they have the volcanic chains being the epicenter of volcanic hazards; 3) they are linked to the causes of major earthquakes; 4) they are the places in the planet Earth where continental crustal largely formed during the past 3 billion years. The study program involves undergraduate students who carry out final undergraduate projects, doctoral candidate graduate students, and the collaboration of colleagues from four universities of Argentina. Our research will strengthen international collaborations with scientists from Chile, Swiss, Spain and the United State.
